Summary:

Current research reveals that the first thematic maps emerged in Austria during the early 16th century. The pioneer of these kinds of maps was Wolfgang Lazius (1514–1565). Among his 22 maps which are still preserved today, there are eight history maps of international renown. After Lazius, cartography in Austria suffered its demise. It was not until the beginning of the 17th century that maps with thematic contents again received new impulses.
