Ernst Spiess:

The Panta Map by the Swiss Alpine Club expedition to the Cordillera Vilcabamba (Peru)

Cartographica Helvetica 28 (2003) 25–32

Summary:

During the expedition to the Andes, organized by the Swiss Alpine Club in 1959, Alpinists climbed six mountain peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba for the first time. The task of the accompanying topographer was to document the approach route for this region and to compile a map at the scale 1:25,000 of this part of the Cordillera and the valleys running northwards, so far cartographically unknown. This paper describes the entire procedure and the applied techniques (classical triangulation, terrestrial photogrammetry, barometric levelling, etc.) as well as the cartographic work.
