Daniel Speich:

The map archives of the Swiss National Linth Commission

Cartographica Helvetica 23 (2001) 35–38

Summary:

The first modern river correction in Switzerland took place from 1807 to 1823 under the supervision of Hans Conrad Escher. For this purpose the National Linth Commission, which still exists today, was founded. This public foundation with limited police functions and the right to levy taxes is unprecedented in Switzerland. The documents and maps of the commission will now be deposited at the Archives of the Canton of Glarus and open to the public. These maps and cartographic publications, spanning almost two decades, reveal an interesting perspective on the construction and extension of the 'Linth Project'. At the same time, however, they are a unique historical source of the Linth Plain.
